I had to think of it this way: Rational people do not—except perhaps in war and childbearing—knowingly choose to jeopardize their own lives or the lives of others. But I was doing exactly that, every single day, without fail. No matter how many times I made a decision to cease and desist, I was simply unable to stop doing behaviors that were putting me and other people in harm’s way. Not one rational person I could think of would knowingly do what I was doing. Even though I did not feel insane, I had to admit my behavior was insane. My life, as I was living it, was unmanageable.
